How good is facebook dating we clarify

Everything you need to know about Facebook Dating

"Actually, it was only a matter of time before Facebook also had a dating section. I know a lot of couples who have met in Facebook groups before, because they've always existed. Whether it makes sense that a new "swipe and go" mode has now been opened again, I don't know. I'm not a fan of it. I would have preferred a different concept, but many of my friends are completely sold on FB dating. They say it's less superficial than Tinder."

Facebook is now more than just a social media network, it is an institution. Around 1/7 of humanity is registered with the blue giant and due to numerous protective measures, there are relatively few fakes! Since the end of 2020, there is now also the new option "Facebook Dating" in Germany, which had been postponed at short notice due to technical difficulties.

What does the new dating function on Facebook offer? Is the Facebook singles exchange promising or rather a disappointment? Erik is 25 years old and has tried it out. His conclusion? Definitely surprising!

Experiences with Facebook Dating

"Simple setup, quick start. As far as that goes, the Facebook Dating app scores. And what was very important to me: no one on my friends list finds out when I join. While online dating isn't actually embarrassing, I wanted to save myself the stupid comments. Besides, I also have work colleagues in my friend list and it's none of their business what I do in my free time."

A very important point for many newbies who have held back a bit on Facebook dating. The fear that friends would find out was great. But here Facebook has quickly provided clarity. No potential partner suggestions are made from the friends list and it is not apparent to anyone that you have registered with the Facebook singles exchange.

How does Facebook dating

"Is this really Facebook? I've often wondered that, because really, everything here is like Tinder, only a little bluer. There is swiping, typical Tinder just and whoever matches can make contact with each other. One advantage: I can see if I've been matched and can then match back. That gives me security, of course."

In fact, the Facebook dating app works much like Tinder, the perennial favorite among dating apps. With some small but subtle differences. As Erik touched on, it takes out a bit of the excitement.

When you're shown a picture of a woman who has already swiped you right. So you can see that she likes you. So you know if you pick the right side now, you'll have a match. A bit relieving, but also a bit boring. After all, when swiping on Tinder, it was exactly that thrill that made matching so exciting, wasn't it

How do I enable Facebook Dating?

"I didn't get how Facebook Dating worked at first. Eventually I realized I needed the app for that. Was never an issue for me before, always used FB via the mobile browser. But the app was quickly installed and I must admit, with it also the rest of Facebook uses much more pleasant than via browser. I would not have expected that."

There are a few basic requirements that must be met in order to participate in Facebook Dating. The important thing, of course, is to have a Facebook profile. Logical. But this profile must also meet a few criteria (not specified by Facebook). Presumably, the Facebook profile must already exist for some time, there must be friends and also photos must not exclusively show cats, dogs or other animals. However, most real profiles meet the standards and can participate in Facebook Dating.

Facebook Dating activate in a few steps:

  1. You download and open the Facebook app.
  2. You click on the three dashes on the right side (next to the bell).
  3. You search for the dating feature and select it.
  4. You confirm participation.
  5. You create a new profile with information that your dating partner will see.
  6. You specify who you are looking for (chat partner, relationship, casual) .
  7. You start to match.

How extensively you fill out your profile is up to you. Facebook asks you several questions to catalog your interests as accurately as possible. You can answer, but you can also skip the questions. The more honest and detailed your answers, the better the possible matching suggestions will fit you.

What does Facebook Dating cost?

Facebook dating is (and presumably will remain) completely free. The social media giant only requires the app download, as a desktop version is not currently offered.

How good is Facebook Dating?

"Actually, it was only a matter of time before Facebook also had a dating section. I know a lot of couples who have met in Facebook groups before, because they've always existed. Whether it makes sense that a new "swipe and go" mode has now been opened again, I don't know. I'm not a fan of it. I would have preferred a different concept, but many of my friends are completely sold on FB dating. They say it's less superficial than Tinder."

The Facebook dating app was fervently awaited in Germany and the popularity is correspondingly high. The concept has not reinvented the wheel, because similar apps are a dime a dozen. What is good is that Facebook separates the area between the social media profile and the dating profile. What is unpleasant is that very often "friends of friends" appear as partner suggestions in the list. Anyone who is looking for an affair probably doesn't want to have their best friend's boss suggested.

Many users are already skeptical of Facebook when it comes to privacy and data anyway. The fact that a Facebook profile is compulsory is considerably annoying and has been the subject of heavy criticism on Tinder before. Now you don't need a FB profile to Tinder, but you do to use the Facebook dating app. It would be interesting to know if decoupling would lead to an increase in users.

Is Facebook Dating a real competitor to Tinder?

"For me personally, the Facebook Dating app is not a competitor to Tinder, more of a complement. Especially since Facebook is free, there's no harm in having the app on your phone and poking your nose in when dating. Tinder will probably forever be the number one dating app and especially in terms of superficiality, there will never be any relevant competition."

In fact, Tinder is the #1 dating app and Facebook probably won't change that much either. After all, as Erik points out, why replace Tinder with Facebook when you can supplement it?

Nevertheless, Tinder shouldn't be too sure of its monopoly position. Because even though its flagship has seen gigantic growth, Facebook also appeals to the generation beyond 30. And this is where Tinder can't compete! Those who are over 28 on Tinder not only have to pay more, but at the same time have fewer chances!

What alternatives are there to Facebook Dating?

"I have several dating apps on my phone and find it good to multi-track. On mine you'll find Lovoo, Badoo, Tinder, Facebook Dating App and Yodel (although the latter is not a dating app). On all of them, I socialize, chat, and occasionally date."

Besides Tinder, Badoo and Lovoo are actually among the biggest dating apps that have the highest profile in German-speaking countries. Yodel, on the other hand, is a student app that is popular for getting to know people because of several dating channels. However, the reach here is significantly lower.

When looking for a partner, however, there are also classic dating agencies such as Lemonswan, Parship or popular and reputable singles exchanges such as LoveScout24, which are also available as app versions. There are thus some relevant alternatives to Facebook Dating, each aimed at different target groups

The bottom line is that Facebook Dating is an interesting addition to the social media giant and should be at least worth considering for everyone due to its free usability. It costs nothing but a little time to just take a peek here and find out if the dating app is an option when looking for a partner. It remains to be seen how FB Dating will spread in this country and whether a free version will be introduced at some point. Because Marc Zuckerberg certainly didn't invent this extension out of pure charity!
